I always thought the term poser was a bit strange. You made a concious decision to become something else? That is what everyone does. Some people are just better at it, and so get to bitch about the "posers." If you want to become goth, just do it. But I would recommend against it. That particular scene if pretty lame. Be a garage rocker, or rockabilly, or punk. Anything but goth.

Go on to Wikkipidia and read up on the history of the culture. Listen around for bands that you like in the gothic rock/ death rock/ dark wave categories. I would recommend Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, the Cruxshadows, Clan of Xymox and Rosetta Stone. (You can access a lot of free music on youtube.com) the rest sort of happens by chance…. Don’t force yourself into anything you don’t want to do. But if you really like the imagery and are interested than it can’t hurt to give it a try. If you find it in some way depressing than it’s probably not for you. Most people I know get a happy, good feeling for the subculture.

I'll give you some advice. As a former "goth", who is now 27 years old, I've gotta say: It's not the clothes you wear, or the type of people you hang out with. It's who you are that makes a difference to other people. Don't let who you *want to be* get in the way of who you *actually are*, just because you respect or admire a certain "type" of person or look. By dressing "goth" you have to be willing to accept that "average" people are going to treat or think of you poorly because of it. Not even necessarily because they think you worship the Devil, or something, but because many will see you as having the immature belief that dressing a certain way *makes* you that way. Dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable. If you only feel comfortable dressing a certain way, maybe it's *you* who is closed-minded to expressing yourself differently. Once High School is over, people stop being typical bullies. People stop being jerks, mostly. People stop making fun of you, because it's immature. It's amazing how something as simple as graduating and moving on lets you see things from a totally better perspective. Remember, don't dress a certain way *just* to be unique. There's millions of other goths, posers, punk people, vampire fanatics, rockabilly people, and whatnot. Clothes and things you like are not what make you unique; It's your personality, intelligence, and the way you treat other people that really matters to people, and makes you stand out amongst the crowd.
