Teenage girls vs boys - who is better in sports if age - training - and muscle mass are equal?

Question: Who is stronger in sports -pound for pound when factors like age - training - and muscle mass are equal

A few years ago, when my wife & I first started going to our grand son's matches and tournaments, we saw maybe a couple of girls during the season. They did not do very well. This past season, i saw maybe a dozen gilrs wrestling at tournaments. At one tournament, two girls won at their weight. There were many instances where a girl would win in the wrestle backs and take third place. Several girls took second places. The girls are getting stronger; and more importantly, they are becoming more and more skilled. For the most part, the boys are still stronger and better wrestlers. The girls are, however, gaining. They are not taking prisoners, but are kicking more and more butts.

Its a fact we girls are pound for pound stronger than the boys! There are more and more of us girls doing sports and are doing strength training and we are being started at a early age! and while we girls are doing this more and more boys are to lazy!

I recently watched a girl beat boys at pull-ups at a crossfit training. The girl was just as muscular but seemed to be stronger and had more muscle endurance than the boys. She was the first to reach 100 pull-ups in a race with three other boys and she beat them all by at least 15 reps! One by 25! After 50 the boys looked tired, all had to stop several times and continue but he boys slowed down more than the girl. That tells me that the female is different, maybe not as big most of the time but possibly stronger. The boys began to look at the girl and try harder but it didn't help. She wasn't breathing hard like boys and didn't look tired. Later she did muscle-ups on rings faster than most boys. I was impressed!

With equal muscle mass there's no contest. Female muscle is stronger and has much more endurance when measured fibre by fibre. Girls are moving into previously male domains like wrestling and they're putting the boys 'in there place' on a regular basis. The days when it was assumed that girls could not beat boys at sports are long gone. Now we know why males didn't want females to compete against them, the girls will win!

Marc, the question is in the context of "equal muscle mass" which we now find is becoming common to see girls with equal musce mass and in fact girls in sports are required to weight train or strength train regulary and often become stronger than the average man while in school sports. The advantage girls have over boys can and has been measured. It stands for men and women as well. Read ther results... The Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, at the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2000 found that female muscle had 75% more endurance over male muscle. The study found that women outlasted men by an average of 75 percent during muscle contractions under a load. But rather than some kind of motivational effect, the study found the difference was due to some feature of the muscles. In studies carried out at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, for example, 10 male and nine female strength athletes (powerlifters and body-builders) performed 20 maximal squat lifts, with three minutes of recovery between each lift. After the 20 lifts, the fatigued leg muscles of both males and females had lost about 20-24% of their maximal strength. However, various indicators of muscular power favoured the females. For one thing, the force-time curve an indicator of muscles ability to contract powerfully and quickly changed negatively by 28% in the males over the course of the workout but dropped by only 19% in the females. Females also recovered from the 20-lift session more quickly. One hour after the workout, female lifters leg muscles could generate about 92% as much force as before the session, whereas male muscles were just 79% as strong. Why was the fatigue greater and recovery slower in males? Part of the problem seemed to be that the male lifters nervous systems became less responsive over the course of the workout. From the first to the 20 lift, activation of leg muscles by nerve cells fell by 20-25% in males but held fairly steady in females. While its not clear why male nerve activation should deteriorate more quickly, it is clear that females lose less of their muscular power during heavy-duty resistance training and seem to recover more rapidly once a tough session is over. (Neuromuscular Fatigue and Recovery in Male and Female Athletes during Heavy Resistance Exercise, International Journal of Sports Medicine, vol. 14(2), pp. 53-59, 1993)

Wow! This is what I watched hapen in crossfit. "Various indicators of muscular power favoured the females. Thanks, that does explain what I've seen! Learned something!

Anonymous,i am one of those girls that wrestle boys in school and crush them! the first time i pinned a boy he cried! and felt good about it!

MariaJun 22 2012 6:40pm
What amazed me is after the girl beat the boys at pull ups, I saw her doing faster muscle ups on rings than the guys! It wasn't competition but it was what I witnessed and I was kind of shocked, I thought she should be more tired! Her pace was faster, she could lift her body quicker and by then her shoulders had veins all over her muscles! She was just so strong!

MarcJun 22 2012 6:45pm
Marc, whats the size of this girl and how big would you say her muscles are?

MariaJun 22 2012 6:49pm
About 5'9" and about 175 lbs. Her biceps were maybe 14.5" or 15" Her forearms were big and her legs well developed even her shoulders were as wide as the broader shoulder guys. She had a smaller muscular waste. Her calves were bigger than most guys. She wasn't the only girl like that! She got my attention though! Beating boys at pull ups! Another girl would do lots of reps overhead with a 150 lb. barbell! Solid muscle!

viktfar? are you the same viktfar that used to have a yahoo group on this girls vs boys topic?? i remember it was one of my favorite groups :) whats been going on? what examples of girls beating boys have you found recently??

jimJun 23 2012 5:04am
Do u think these girls could crush Zac efrons muscles ?

TonyJun 23 2012 7:07am
Tony, why this obsession with Zac efrons muscles?and his muscles are for show and there are a lot of girls with bigger and much stronger muscles than he has!

AnonymousJun 23 2012 8:14am
Just think he a very good example if a musclebound boy don't u think? Agree he might be all for show. What age girls have u seen who you think could 1. Best him ina wrestle and 2. Have bigger muscles than him?

TonyJun 23 2012 9:35am
Tony, there are a lot of males that have big muscles but have no strength behind them! and girls like me do! and yes i could destroy him wrestling and i don't know if mine are bigger but mine are stronger than his and we haven't gotten my real strength my legs! most men don't do leg work outs and i could crush him with my power in my legs!

AnonymousJun 23 2012 10:43am
So u admit efrons muscles are bigger than yours then ? So would you liketo destroy him yourself or see another girl do it? Do you think any girl at all could dominate him wrestling ?

Tony, yea i could dominated him wrestling him and there are plenty of girls like me that could also! and so what if he has bigger muscles but is there strength behind them! i know mine do! i bet i could bend his body to which he didn't think possible! and than i would knock him out squeezing him with my thighs!

AnonymousJun 23 2012 11:35am
What do u mean by bend his body how much damage you going to do to him? What are your stats for pecs abs biceps what u reckon his are? What's smallest girl U think could pin him?

TonyJun 23 2012 11:55am
Tony, i am 18 years old 5'10 175 pounds of muscle! i have 15 inch biceps 23 inch thighs and a 39 inch chest and i have been lifting weights since i was 13 because of school sports! my coaches introduced me strength training and got to love lifting and getting strong to where i notice my muscles and my strength where better than some of the guys at my school and i notice when i work out in gyms i was stronger then some of the adult males working out and one day i was introduced to wrestling by one of my male friends and taught me how to and as i got stronger i was holding my own against him and then one day i wrapped my thighs around him his body and squeezed him out!

AnonymousJun 23 2012 12:26pm
Cathe, whats your story? have you proven to a male that you are pound for pound stronger then they are?

AnonymousJun 23 2012 2:19pm
Those crossfit girls have amazing physiques. Could they beat a guy at boxing or MMA? Anyone know of any matches?

curiousJun 24 2012 8:12am
ok, if girls are stronger why is that the only girls we usually hear about wrestling in school are always in the light weight classes, at weights few boys even are? why aren't girls represented equally across the weight classes?

but umJun 25 2012 8:36am
In high school wrestling, girls can be competitive with boys until about 145 lbs. Many girl wrestlers play soccer, swim, etc. and have more endurance and better cardio than the boys they wrestle. Boys, especially beginners, tend to rely on uper body strength while girls use leg, hip, and belly muscles to wear down their male opponents, then go for the pin. girls are also frequently more "coachable", willing to work longer and harder to master moves and holds. Frequently they are also more agile and flexible as well.

Girls as a whole are only ONE generation into the freedom to become athletes, so it takes time. Never the less girls are gaining so fast that they often are stronger and better at sports than boys.

AnonymousJun 25 2012 2:01pm
In other words, pound for pound the girls have stronger muscles. The Chinese girls beat many of the male weight classes. Girls are getting bigger and in time they will become the stonger sex in all aspects of strength.

AnonymousJun 25 2012 2:13pm
If girls are so strong, why do they almost always lose fights and wrestling matches to boys. I could beat up my big sister when I was 10 and she was always athletic.

And having read all this crap I wonder why it is that men and women don't compete together in the olympics and why the world records for men's sports are better than for women's. Keep kidding yourselves for the sake of your boners fantasizing abouting it.

RealistJun 26 2012 4:19pm
Realist, you must live in a cave because the last time i looked Men and women are competing in the Olympics! and most of the medals being won are the women! you are just a clueless man doesn't know what he is talking about!

AnonymousJun 26 2012 5:09pm
Em. Compare women's and men's 100 metres times. Or weightlifting. Or marathon. Or 5000 metres. Or swimming. What you find is that the men's records are better than the women's. All I'm arguing is that you can fantasize about women being stronger, fitter, faster than men. And I agree than some women are when compared to some men. But generally, as shown by the differences in world record times in Olympic sports in which men and women do not compete against one another, men do better. Not a caveman comment. The truth!

RealistJun 27 2012 10:32am
I read a comparison somewhere that showed women's records against men's records. the comparisons were compared by heights. Even tho the men's sprint record was faster than the women's in actual time. BUT, when figered heigth of woman vs height of man, the woman's speed in relation of her height vs the Male record in relation to his height, the woman was much faster. The same went for other longer distances as well. In swimming, the difference was even greater in the women's favor. In ultra marathons, women are actually winning by large margins. Long distance swimming records are in women's favor. In those events, the records are held outright without figuring per height. I agree that women are closing gaps. I was a sprinter in High School. I was fast, but high school girls today are leaving my times in the dust. I was running about 65 years ago, but in those days, girls did not run competitively. In some cases, the girls are only 20 or 25 years behind in actula speed, but right now, they are ahead in relation to heights.

ObservingJun 27 2012 11:44am
In weight lifting, there are already women who could place in men's events. Maybe not first place in olympics, but there are women who are able to take as high as 1st or 2nd in local events against men. Realist, i am wondering if you can actually compete against today's women in your favorite event. Second and third favorite?

A year or so ago, there was a triathlon in a nearby town. There were two sisters who took 2nd and 3rd places. A man won, but those two women were not far behind.

ObservingJun 28 2012 2:52am
Another thing I found the other day...was some stats from the NFL draft combine they have in February to test all the top college football players before they hit the NFL. The average number of reps on the 225lb bench press station was 21.5. The average weight of the athletes doing it was 247lbs. Convert that for a 100lb college gymnast and she would need to do a 91lb bench press 22 times and then she'd be stronger pound for pound than the average (soon-to-be) NFL footballer. Anyone want to bet against that? These girls can do mountains of push-ups and pull-ups, knocking out 22 presses at 90% of their weight seems like a cinch.

jimJun 30 2012 6:48pm
GIRL GYMNASTS, How about it. I am sure there are some who are lurking here and could chime in with some lifting stats. I am sure that pound bodyweight per weight lifted, some of you are moving fantastic weights that would embarrass many male athletes.

ObservingJul 01 2012 1:04am
Yeah, gymnasts are the strongest girls, but they still can't beat a half-way athletic boy at wrestling or fighting. Girls are wimpier pound for pound - lmao.

AnonymousJul 02 2012 5:53am
Anonymous, you are another clueless brainless man to think a half-way athletic boy at wrestling could beat a gymnasts! A girl gymnasts would destroy any boy with the strength of her muscles! it wouldn't be even close!

AnonymousJul 02 2012 11:34am
I know gymnasts are stronger than many boys, but that is not the only factor in a fight. Boys are quicker and know how to punch. A boy will get in 2-3 solid shots for every weak punch the girl lands. Even if she is stronger, she eventually gets ko'ed or beat down. I've seen weaker boys beat stronger girls just this way.

AnonymousJul 02 2012 3:00pm
I knew a girl back in the mid 1940's who was very strong. In those days, most guys poked fun at such a strong girl. There was a football player (offensive & defensive lineman) who was especially cruel to her. He was nearly a foot taller and a whole lot heavier lotheavier and he made her life miserable. Any time she went after him in retaliation, he would just outrun the girl. One day, the FB player missed school. when he returned, he had a big swelling on one of his cheeks and he had a sore shoulder. He had some story about what had happened to him, but he never made fun of that girl again. If anybody else started in on her, he just made himself scarce. from then on, he never bothered her. Who knows why? Ha ha

I can't believe that a lot of those macho male can't understand tat there are girls who are strong, even without working out. There are strong boys and weak boys, and strong girls and weak girls. It's stupid to believe that every boy is stronger then every girl.

If girls and boys have the same muscle mass girl are much stronger then boys.

wimMar 13 2013 4:28am
I knew a muscular athletic girl who could beat boys at armwrestling, wrestling, fighting. She was tough enough that she was usually one of the first picked for backyard football games. If you didn't look closely, you would think she was the strongest, toughest boy around. But she still threw like a girl - she looked girly when she threw and she couldn't throw as far or as hard as the boys - LMAO!

When I was in highschool I had a crush on a beautiful girl. We were both 16 years old. I was 6 feet tall 155 pounds. She was 5'1 and weighed aprox 110 to 120 pounds. In P.E. class she squatted like 170 lbs or something. She did reps with it. I tried and couldnt lift it at all. She bench 110 lbs with ten reps. I could bareley lift it. She was stronger. When we were both 18 she could outlift me in everything. Another hot girl could lift more then me. I also lost armwrestling to yet a different girl. I was always embarassed because the pretty girls that i liked were all stronger. I outweighed them by 40 pounds yet was weaker.
