They may be in love and have done something terribly stupid and hurtful and regret it and be ready to work on the relationship that the cheating was to get out of facing the work it needed in the relationship. Or they may believe they are in love with you and not understand what love is. Even if they are in love that isn't always enough. WANTING to work things out and having the capacity to work things out are two different things. A lapse in judgement can ocur, maybe they got put in a situation and had "sex" but weren't making love, genitals can be traitorous. To me sex is a complement to love and if my partner has sex with someone else I am willing to forgive them because I love the person and if they want to try and save the relationship then I am all for it.
