DO YOU THINK MICHAEL PHELPS' CURRENT RECORD OF EIGHT OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS WILL EVER BE BROKEN?

Question: This could be a question for the Sports and Games category but I put it here instead because this is something that expands far beyond the borders of sports and games. It took 36 years for Mark Spitz' record of seven Olympic Gold Medals to be broken by none other than Michael Phelps who came extremely close (EXTREMELY CLOSE!!!) to not accomplishing this amazing feat. It is believed that there are certain records now standing that will never be broken. Do you think Michael Phelps' current record winning of eight Olympic Gold Medals will ever be broken?

If they ever have 9 events it will be broken. It's funny you should ask though, I was just thinking while in the pool recently that they never showed that replay of his very close race too much. It looked like a tie to me. You'd think that replay would have been everywhere for days or even weeks. I think they fix sports as much as they can these days. They can't pay the athletes off, they make too much money but they can do other things. If Phelps clearly lost that race then they could do nothing but because it was so close, they give him the gold, no review. They can't ask golfers to choke but they certainly offer horrible crowd control which defintiley affects Woods' playing partners. People running and jostling for position while his playing partner putts, it has probably granted him 12-15 additional wins in his career. So yeah, if it sells tickets and the products endorsed by the athlete then next time a Spitz or Phelps comes along, he'll break the record.

Sure because they keep adding duplicative events so the first poster is right. A decathlete has to do ten events for just one medal. Soccer and basketball qualifying starts two years before the medal is awarded. But some sports are set up so the best athlete can get a natural sweep. Swimming is certainly one. Gymnasts can win four medals in one day. A sprinter in track can win four or five medals with the relays and fast teammates. Granted there is something to be said about maintaining your peak but winning five swimming races and three relays is not the same thing as say winning the 100m freestyle, the 100m dash, the archery competition and the three day equestrian event. Physically what Zatopek did in 1952 5K, 10K, and Marathon track races, is probably tougher than what Phelps did or what Spitz did in 72. But I was a distance runner in high school so maybe I am biased.
