Why was it necessary for the senate to vote on the health care bill in the middle of the night and on Christmas Eve?

Question: The senate held votes at really strange times to get the health care bill passed. Why?
Created by: senatorxxx at 11:34:24 PM, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 EST

Comments

Most people, including those voting on it, have no idea what is in the bill. This will destroy what was left of American freedom and prosperity.

AnonymousDec 24 2009 4:36am

they voted late at night because republicans wanted to delay it as much as possible

AnonymousDec 24 2009 12:19pm
Actually, that is false. Republicans had no power to delay or stop the bill because the Democrats have a super majority of 60 votes. In fact, the bill passed without a single republican vote. Recent polls reveal that over 2/3 of the population was opposed to this legislation, and the longer the debate lasted in congress, the higher the level of public awareness, which is where the problem starts. The way to avoid public awareness is to conduct business at a time when the average person is preoccupied with something, such as celebrating Christmas with their families. The suggestion that this was done because of Republicans in congress illustrates how misinformed the average citizen actually is. The truth of the matter is that the Republicans are impotent and insignificant in both the House and Senate. All branches are under the control of one party. The one thing Democrats fear is public outcry once they find out what the bill really contains. Holding the votes at weird times when people couldn't care less avoids the need for damage control. The American people have given up the will to matter in deciding their own destiny. All they have done is sit back and let the federal government seize yet a larger portion of control over the lives of the people. The financial markets were first. Then the automobile manufacturers. Then health insurance. Next will be cap & Trade. By the time immigration comes up, the country will already be unrecognizable.

The majority of Americans are politically ignorant.

DellDec 24 2009 8:31pm
My proposal is if you are poor and no insurance--AND YET CANT QUALIFY FOR MEDICAID, just dont pay the bill. No need for this huge bill in the senate, just dont pay. Then its up to the hospital to modify system and lower cost so they wont be out of more money

JUST DONT PAYDec 25 2009 2:47am
Just dont pay. If you cant qualify for medicaid, just don` pay. Make it illegeal for hospitals to seize their assets. And force the medical establishment to negotiate with the uninsured a price and/or payment plan that fits the patients budgets. This method will force the establishment to bring down the prices, which is the cause of all this to begin with

AnonymousDec 26 2009 8:01am
1) hello hospitals will go bankrupt because no one will want to pay (or refuse to give you saving surgery (this "llustrates how misinformed the average citizen actually is") 2)Of course republicans can delay. There is a requirement of 30 hours of debate after the first filibuster, republicans read some 700 pages of whatever {not clear what) and repeated false talking point many time over to delay the bill. THe senate requires unanimous consent to function (which you would know if you watched C-span or put in the least amount of effort to study senate procedures before calling me ignorant) 3) please show me what in the bill will get gov't involved in anything. There is no public option (which 66% of Americans support) only an expansion of the very popular program -medicaid and some federal help for people who can't buy insurance.

AnonymousDec 26 2009 4:30pm
You are completely ignorant.

AnonymousDec 26 2009 5:21pm
I believe Shelley is right on this one. All of the polls indicate there was a lack of public support for this bill. They wanted to get it passed before they ran into another situation like Bush did with Immigration reform. Although I voted for this president, I am now having regrets after seeing how they operate with a complete majority.

Tall skinny weak men do not deserve health insurance.

If the hospitals refuse life saving surgery, they could be shut down. 2) hospitals have to negotiate a fair payment system with the patient, not where they would pay nothing. To the contrary, if its a liver transplant they maybe making payments for 30 yrs. But it is agreeable. 3) make health insurance dirt cheap, easily accessable. They can't turn you away because of any condition. Like auto insurance, you just sign up, pay your 40 dollar fee and you are covered. All the goverment needs to do is to establish ethical guidelines that the medical establishment must abide by

Lol that's what happens when you post with your blackberry! Apologies

AnonymousDec 27 2009 3:32am
On the other hand as much as I already pay in taxes, why shouldnt the goverment take care of me?

AnonymousDec 27 2009 6:57am
The government is not going to take care of you. They are going to make it mandatory for you to buy health insurance in addition to paying taxes. And if you do not comply, you will be in violation of the law and will be fined. A lot of people are under the impression that this bill gives people free medical care, which is not at all true. It will, however, give the government the power to decide what care is available to you.

DonDec 27 2009 9:07am
1) the bill as whole is unpopular but every part of this bill (medicaid expansion, subsidies, regulations) is overwhelmingly popular 2) If they don't refuse surgery they will go bankrupt, either way (unless financed by the gov't) we will have less hospitals care 3)this might work but (if you mind this which I actually don't) it will be a system where the rich pay for poor and middle class health care as they will pay more to hospitals. 3) mandate makes perfect sense economically because of you don't have health insurance and you go to the emergency room the taxpayers than have to pay for your operation so it makes sense that you will have to give the taxpayers some of their money back in fees if you can afford insurance and choose not to (mandate doesn't apply to those who can't afford insurance). 4)personally, I find it funny people calling me ignorant without having any idea what they are talking about.

AnonymousDec 27 2009 10:26am
sorry about the double 3, late at night

AnonymousDec 27 2009 10:26am
You're the idiot with the Blackberry, right? The one who claims he's well informed because he watches TV a lot? The one who keeps apologizing for his inability to communicate effectively? You are a mindless drone who has been so brainwashed by the media that you have no thoughts of your own. If you did have an original thought, you would be too stupid to figure out how to post it from your Blackberry without duplicating the message repeatedly, or you would get everything ass backward and blame the fact that it is late at night. You are ignorant. I know you better than you know yourself.

AnonymousDec 27 2009 5:17pm
The president is giving all of us free health care. How could anything be wrong with that?

Free stuff is coolDec 28 2009 6:29am
Free health care sounds pretty good to me. What I can't figure out is why it was so hard to get this passed if it is all going to be free. In fact, I'm surprised someone didn't think of this years ago.

AnonymousDec 28 2009 5:28pm
the democrats are very dirty people. they are crooks/liars/cheats. all they want to do is tax and spend. they blamed bush for stuff they caused. sooner or later this copuntry will wake up.

Obama claims he inherited all his problems from Bush. Fair enough. A president can't implement policy without the votes from the members of congress. Who has been in control of congress since the 2006 mid term election? Democrats. The problems Obama inherited were put in motion by members of the house and senate under control of a democrat majority. One of the senators who created those problems under the Bush administration was a senator from Illinois named Barack Husein Obama. He was in the senate when Bush was in power. He was one of the people who had the power to make a difference, which he did. He voted and participated in passing bills. No that he's been elected, he is pretending that he had no role in the senate. Nor did Pelosi, Reed, Durbin, or any of the other corrupt democrats who were calling the shots the whole time.

BillDec 30 2009 10:55am
First if your going to complain about Obama's middle name then spell it right. Second what bills are you talking about. The deficit was exploding, the iraq and afghanistan wars were blowing up in our face and all the bad lending and bank deregulation that caused the economic crises have ben put into effect before democrats gained power in 2007. Can you name a specific bill passed by the 110th congress that caused any of the things that Bush got blamed for?

AnonymousDec 30 2009 9:37pm
Honestly Obama is a one term president. NOt neccessarily the fault of his own. America just got themselves in a situation that we cant get out of. The goverment has been grasping at straws, but no firm plan. I predict by the end of the year, its going to get worse. Possibly a deep depression. The goverment treats this like its just another recession. the fact is we are facing something that is unprecedented and much greater. I think the next decade is going to be pretty grim. Possibly making the great depression look like a mild recession to compare

AnonymousJan 01 2010 6:55am
I also predict the only jobs out in the next decade will be in multi level marketing. It will be the age of amway, shaklee and mary kay -- just to name a few

AnonymousJan 01 2010 6:59am

I have family and friends in Germany. They are in disbelief over how naive and gullible the Americans have become. The Germans elected a smooth talking radical back in the first half of the last century. They thought the Americans would have learned from history.

HansJan 03 2010 9:05pm
Hitler was a right wing dictator. (also americans elected Reagan solely based on his charisma and nothing else)

AnonymousJan 04 2010 12:46pm
Actually, the idea that Hitler was a right wing dictator is a misconception. The Nazis (Nationalist Socialist Party) were just another version of extreme left wing socialists. Expanded government control of the private sector (sounds familiar) was a key element in the Hitler administration. It is convenient to try to redefine the nature of fascism to fit your agenda, but you have been programmed by your ideology. Hook, line and sinker, you have bought into it all.

LeonardJan 05 2010 1:15pm
Hitler HATED socialists. he and Stalin were arch enemies.

AnonymousJan 05 2010 3:15pm
Hitler hated a lot of things, but that doesn't change the fact that the Nazis were just another form of socialists. Their principles were the same. The Germans attacked Poland from the west. The Russians attacked from the east. At the end of the day, there was not much difference, except that the Russians were sneakier about it.
